Series Introduction
Tiina: Hi everyone, A here, and welcome back to FinnishPod101.com. This is Basic Bootcamp Lesson 4: Counting from 1-100 in Finnish. This is the fourth in a five-part series that will help you ease your way into Finnish.
Reeta: Hei, minä olen B. I’m B!
Lesson Details
Reeta: In this lesson, you will learn one of the essentials in Finnish…numbers.
Tiina: So, everybody…pull out your abacuses…
Reeta: Haha.
Tiina: Kidding!
Reeta: At least, we'll try to make learning numbers as easy for you as using an abacus.
Tiina: Yes, we'll start with the basics. In this lesson, we will count from one to 10.
Reeta: Okay, now this conversation takes place at a gym
Tiina: That’s right. It’s between Mikko and his coach, who will be counting his pushups.

Banter - Same as the cultural insight (12 lines)
Tiina: Once you learn the basics, you'll be able to build larger numbers by putting together different parts of the words.
Reeta: Just like bricks when building a house!
Tiina: Comparing a number to building a house doesn't sound easy to me!
Reeta: Don't worry, I know a trick to make it much easier than it sounds.
Tiina: Great, share it with us!
Reeta: So here is what we're is going to have you all do. No matter where you are, no matter if you're at home, or on the subway, in your car, we want you to talk to yourself. Don't worry if people think you're crazy.
Tiina: It's for a good cause. Basically, B is going to read out each number, and you have to repeat after him.
Reeta: Okay, here we go. I will say it and give you time to repeat aloud after me.
Vocabulary: Take these words from the Vocabulary table in the write up.

Vocabulary Usage
Tiina: Okay, so we’ve more or less mastered the basic numbers one to ten, but how can we count above 10?
Reeta: Well, we form the numbers eleven through nineteen simply by adding -toista to the numbers one through nine.
Tiina: So how does it go?
Reeta: Yksitoista, kaksitoista, kolmetoista, neljätoista, viisitoista, kuusitoista, seitsemäntoista, kahdeksantoista, yhdeksäntoista.
Tiina: Oh, is it that simple?!
Reeta: Yes it is. Even the numbers are quite long, but at least they are repeating the -toista, whic makes it easier to remember the,m.
Tiina: Great, we covered the most difficult part. Now let's take a look at the multiples of ten, which, once you know one to nine, are really easy!
Reeta: Ten and one-hundred are the only ones that stand out this time. kymmenen, sata.
Tiina: Other than these three, you add "-kymmentä" as an ending to your number.
Reeta: So fifty would be viisikymmentä.
Tiina: Listen and repeat:
Reeta: viisikymmentä {pause}
Tiina: So as you might have noticed, "viisi-" is from "viisi" ("number five"), and "--kymmentä" indicates that it is a multiple of ten.
Reeta: Here are the rest.
Tiina: Listeners, repeat after B.
Reeta: kolmekymmentä, {pause} neljäkymmentä, {pause} viisikymmentä, {pause} kuusikymmentä, {pause} seitsemänkymmentä, {pause} kahdeksankymmentä, {pause} yhdeksänkymmentä {pause}
Tiina: Okay, we're done with the multiples of ten. Now I'm going to venture into some other important number territory. But still, not higher than one hundred to start.
Reeta: Yes. No number overloading. This may be boot camp, but there is no torture employed here.
Tiina: Okay, so how old are you, B?
Reeta: I see where you're going with this. Actually, you may have to employ torture to get this information. Okay, yes, yes, I am in the double digits. Twenty five.
Tiina: So, to make a number that isn't in a denomination of ten, here's all you do. Twenty, we remember, is kaksikymmentä. Well, now all you do is add on the rest.
Reeta: kaksikymmentäviisi.
Tiina: Great, because viisi is the number for "five." So all you have to do is say twenty plus a five on the end.
Reeta: Yes, so let's try it with more numbers. How old are you, A? It's okay; they'll believe whatever we say. They can't see us!
Tiina: So what is thirty-one in Finnish?
Reeta: Kolmekymmentäyksi.
Tiina: Yes, because it's thirty plus yksi, which is the number for "one." Okay, okay, B, let's tell them our real ages. We're actually sixty-eight. How do we say that?
Reeta: Well the number for "sixty," remember, is kuusikymmentä. So we just add the eight at the end. kuusikymmentäkahdeksan.
Grammar Section
Tiina: Okay, now let's take a look at today's Grammar Point; Cardinal and Ordinal numbers.
Reeta: So we got down most numbers, but these are only known as cardinals; counting the quantity. What if we want to say for example “May seventeenth,” an ordinal number
Tiina: Oh, that is right. Even in English these are different. So starting from one what are the ordinal numbers in Finnish
Reeta: ensimmäinen {pause}
Tiina: "first" .
Reeta: toinen{pause}
Tiina: "Second".
Reeta: kolmas {pause}
Tiina: "third".
Tiina: Let's try with the examples.
Reeta: Marraskuun ensimmäinen . {pause}
Tiina: "November first"
Reeta: toinen kerta {pause}
Tiina: "The second time"
Reeta: Kolmas talo oikealta {pause}
Tiina: "The third house from the right."
Tiina: As you can see these numbers change significantly when ordinal. The thing is that in Finnish as in English all cardinal numbers from 1 to 1 million have ordinal equivalents.
Reeta: So as a soft introduction let’s list the twelve first ones here.
Tiina: Alright so continuing from third we have fourth.
Reeta: neljäs{pause}
Tiina: "fourth"
Reeta: viides {pause}
Tiina: "fifth"
Reeta: kuudes {pause}
Tiina: "sixth".
Reeta: seitsemäs {pause}
Tiina: "seventh"
Reeta: kahdeksas {pause}
Tiina: "eigth"
Reeta: yhdeksäs. {pause}
Tiina: "ninth"
Reeta: kymmenes {pause}
Tiina: "tenth"
Reeta: yhdestoista {pause}
Tiina: "eleventh"
Reeta: kahdestoista {pause}
Tiina: "twelfth"
Reeta: Alright, after twelfth we have from thirteenth to nineteenth, and like English there is a logic.
Tiina: Right. To make cardinal numbers from 13 to 19 ordinal just add the cardinal number and -toista at the end.
Reeta: Like kolmastoista {pause}
Tiina: "thirteenth"
Reeta: ja neljästoista. {pause}
Tiina: "fourteenth"
Reeta: Okay, enough, enough. We got the idea, right? All you have to do is practice now!
Tiina: That’s it for this lesson.
Reeta: Thanks for listening. Bye (in Finnish)
Tiina: See you!
