| Peter: They do, Becky. Even I came close to failing my 2014 resolution of learning Italian. |
| Becky: So what happened? Did you achieve it? |
| Peter: Becky, I smashed through my resolution. Last year, I set a goal to speak a full 30 minutes of pure Italian conversation. And I FINALLY reached it in mid December. Becky, want to know how I did it? |
| Becky: Definitely! Listeners, pay attention, because this is a GREAT lesson. |
| Peter: So, a few simple changes to my goal made a massive difference. |
| Becky: What kinds of changes? |
| Peter: Most people typically aim for a vague resolution like “This year, I’ll master Italian.” So I started aiming for smaller, more measurable goals, with deadlines. In my case, it was to “Speak 30 Minutes of Italian conversation by December 31st” |
| Becky: That definitely sounds more manageable. After all, you can’t expect to magically become fluent. You put a number on it. |
| Peter: Exactly. No magic here, Becky. Then, I started setting smaller, monthly goals that would add up to 30 minutes by the end of the year. |
| Becky: How did that work? |
| Peter: Well, for January 2014, my goal was to hit 3 minutes by January 31st, 2014. I reached that. For February, I aimed higher - 5 minutes. By July 31st, I was at around 20 minutes. |
| Becky: And now you’re at 30 minutes! That means you can have normal conversations in Italian with no problems, right? |
| Peter: Pretty much! And I’m blown away at how easy it was once I changed my mindset. |
| Becky: Are there any other effective learning tips you can give to our learners out there for 2015? |
| Peter: You should write down your small, measurable goal, set a deadline, and place it somewhere you’ll see it every day. It sounds a little strange, but it keeps you focused. |
| Becky: And that doesn’t just apply to language learning, but any goal you’re trying to achieve in life! |
