INTRODUCTION
Gina: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Finnish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Gina: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question How are you? In Finnish this is
Jarmo: Mitä kuuluu?
Gina: The first word in the question is
Jarmo: mitä
Gina: meaning what in English.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) mitä
Gina: Listen again and repeat.
Jarmo: mitä

Gina: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Jarmo: kuuluu
Gina: meaning something like is heard.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) kuuluu
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: kuuluu

Gina: Listen to the entire question and repeat.

Gina: means thank you.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) kiitos
Gina: Now repeat

Gina: meaning good.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) hyvää
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: hyvää

Gina: Listen to the speaker say, I'm fine, thanks, and then repeat.
Jarmo: Kiitos hyvää.

Gina: To use a different phrase, replace fine with great.
Jarmo: hienoa
Gina: great
Jarmo: (slow) hienoa (regular) hienoa
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with great
Jarmo: Kiitos hienoa.
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace fine. Say I'm great, thanks.

Gina: To use a different phrase, replace great with quite good.
Jarmo: aika hyvää
Gina: quite good
Jarmo: (slow) aika hyvää (regular) aika hyvää
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with quite good
Jarmo: Kiitos aika hyvää.
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for great. Say I'm quite good, thanks.

Gina: To make another phrase, replace quite good with so-so.
Jarmo: ihan ok
Gina: so-so
Jarmo: (slow) ihan ok (regular) ihan ok
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with so-so

Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for quite good. Say I'm so-so.

Gina: You want to ask someone how they are doing. Ask the question
