INTRODUCTION
Gina: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Finnish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Gina: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What do you do? In Finnish this is
Jarmo: Mitä sinä teet?
Gina: The first word in the question is
Jarmo: Mitä
Gina: meaning what in English.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) Mitä
Gina: Listen again and repeat.
Jarmo: Mitä
{Pause}
Gina: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Jarmo: sinä
Gina: meaning you.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) sinä
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: sinä
{Pause}
Gina: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Jarmo: Mitä sinä
{pause}
Gina: And next
Jarmo: teet
Gina: meaning you do.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) teet
Gina: Now repeat.

Gina: Listen to the entire question and repeat.

Gina: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question What do you do??

Gina: ""I'm a teacher.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Jarmo: (Slow) Olen opettaja

Gina: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Jarmo: olen
Gina: means I am.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) olen
Gina: Now repeat
Jarmo: olen
{Pause}
Gina: And next
Jarmo: opettaja
Gina: meaning teacher.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) opettaja
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: opettaja
{Pause}
Gina: Listen to the speaker say, I'm a teacher., and then repeat.
Jarmo: Olen opettaja
{pause}
Gina: To use a different phrase, replace teacher with student.
Jarmo: opiskelija
Gina: student
Jarmo: (slow) opiskelija (regular) opiskelija
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with student
Jarmo: Olen opiskelija
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace teacher. Say I'm a student.

Jarmo: Olen opiskelija
Gina: To expand on the pattern, replace student with translator.
Jarmo: kääntäjä
Gina: translator
Jarmo: (slow) kääntäjä (regular) kääntäjä
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with translator
Jarmo: Olen kääntäjä
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for student. Say I'm a translator.

Gina: To expand on the pattern, replace translator with lawyer.
Jarmo: lakimies
Gina: lawyer
Jarmo: (slow) lakimies (regular) lakimies
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with lawyer

Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for translator. Say I'm a lawyer.

Gina: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Finland and someone asks what you do. You are a teacher. Respond to the question.

Gina: Imagine you are a translator. . Answer the speaker's question.

Gina: Imagine you're lawyer. Respond to the question.
Jarmo: Mitä sinä teet? (five seconds) Olen lakimies
Gina: You want to learn what that person does. Ask the question

Your sentence is very much correct. You could also use the word "baarimestari" instead, but "baarimikko" is correct too. 👍

Hello,


when I want to say, "I am a student, but also a barrista at the café.", how should the correct phrase look like in finnish? I came up with: "Olen opiskelija mutta olen myös baarimikko kahvilassa."

I am not sure about my syntactic structure, could you help me out? (also, do you have a special word for a barista, not a bartender?)
