INTRODUCTION
Gina: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Finnish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Gina: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Can you eat Finnish food? In Finnish this is
Jarmo: Voitko syödä suomalaista ruokaa?
Gina: The first word in the question is
Jarmo: Voitko
Gina: meaning something like can you in English.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) Voitko
Gina: Listen again and repeat.
Jarmo: Voitko
{Pause}
Gina: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Jarmo: syödä
Gina: meaning eat.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) syödä
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: syödä

Gina: ""Yes, it's delicious.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Jarmo: (Slow) Kyllä, se on herkullista.

Gina: To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Jarmo: Ei, en voi.
Gina: Which is like saying No, I can’t, in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Jarmo: (Slowly) Ei, en voi.
Gina: And one more time at normal speed:
Jarmo: Ei, en voi.
Gina: Now let's break down our original response from the beginning. The first word:
Jarmo: kyllä
Gina: means yes.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) kyllä
Gina: Now repeat
Jarmo: kyllä

Gina: And next
Jarmo: se
Gina: meaning it.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) se
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: se

Gina: And after that
Jarmo: on
Gina: meaning is.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) on
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: on

Gina: Listen to the speaker say, Yes, it's delicious., and then repeat.

Gina: To use a different phrase, replace delicious with good.
Jarmo: hyvää
Gina: good
Jarmo: (slow) hyvää (regular) hyvää
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with good
Jarmo: Kyllä, se on hyvää.
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace delicious. Say Yes, it's good.

Jarmo: Kyllä, se on hyvää.
Gina: To expand on the pattern, replace good with quite good.
Jarmo: aika hyvää
Gina: quite good
Jarmo: (slow) aika hyvää (regular) aika hyvää
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with quite good
Jarmo: Kyllä, se on aika hyvää.
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for good. Say Yes, it's quite good.

Jarmo: Kyllä, se on aika hyvää.
Gina: To expand on the pattern, replace quite good with ok.
Jarmo: OK (ookoo)
Gina: ok
Jarmo: (slow) OK (ookoo) (regular) OK (ookoo)
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ok
Jarmo: Kyllä, se on OK (ookoo).
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace quite good. Say Yes, it's ok.

Jarmo: Kyllä, se on OK (ookoo).
QUIZ
Gina: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Finland and someone asks if you can eat Finnish food. You want to answer that it is delicious. Respond to the question.
Jarmo: Voitko syödä suomalaista ruokaa? (five seconds) Kyllä, se on herkullista.
Gina: Now, you want to say that it's good Respond to the question.
Jarmo: Voitko syödä suomalaista ruokaa? (five seconds) Kyllä, se on hyvää.
Gina: Now, you want to say that it's quite good. . Answer the speaker's question.
Jarmo: Voitko syödä suomalaista ruokaa? (five seconds) Kyllä, se on aika hyvää.
Gina: Now, you want to say that it's ok. Respond to the question.
Jarmo: Voitko syödä suomalaista ruokaa? (five seconds) Kyllä, se on OK (ookoo).
Gina: Now you want to ask someone if they can eat Finnish food. Ask the question
