Finnish Accents

Are you learning Finnish as a second language? You may have heard that Finnish is a notoriously difficult language for English speakers to master. The good news is that there is an almost one-to-one correspondence between letters in the Finnish alphabet and sounds. While there are a few sounds in the language that you may find difficult to pronounce, for the most part, Finnish accents are fairly easy to master as long as you have access to the right resources.

When reading Finnish words from text, you will be able to sound them out with relative ease. To make things easier for yourself, it is important to also listen to native Finnish speakers during conversation. Unless you are already an intermediate Finnish speaker, you may not get much out of Finnish movies or other audio that does not slow down the language for non-native speakers. The Finnish language is known for its double vowels and consonants. Learning how to properly pronounce words that have double vowels and consonants will help you to get your point across more clearly and to understand others during conversations in Finnish. For instance, lakki means “cap” while laki means “law” in Finnish. If you do not hold the “k” long enough when trying to say “cap” in Finnish, others may think that you are saying “law.” In general, it is important to hold double consonants 2 to 2.5 times longer than single consonants.
