Body |
Becky: Here's the informal way to say 'Hi.' in Finnish. |
Nico: [Normal] Hei. |
Becky: This expression has only one word meaning 'Hi' |
Nico: [Normal] hei [Slow] hei |
Becky: Listen again to the informal word meaning 'Hi.' |
Nico: [Slow] Hei. [Normal] Hei. |
Becky: Ok, now let's take a look at the formal way to say 'Good day.' |
Nico: [Normal] Hyvää päivää. |

Nico: [Normal] hyvästi [Slow] hyvästi |
Becky: Listen again to the formal word meaning 'Goodbye.' |
Nico: [Slow] Hyvästi. [Normal] Hyvästi. |
Cultural Insight |
Becky: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight. |
Nico: Greetings like hei and moi are casual, but common, and often used among friends and colleagues. Shop staff may greet you this way as well, if the atmosphere in the shop is casual. Hyvää päivää is more of a formal greeting, but it's still a common greeting among the older generation. When parting, you can just say hei-hei, moi, or nähdään taas, which means "see you again!" Hyvästi used to be just a normal way to say "goodbye," but nowadays has a definitive tone to it, meaning when you say goodbye, you really mean goodbye. |
Outro
|
Becky: And that’s all for this lesson. Don’t forget to check out the lesson notes, and we’ll see you in the next lesson! |
Nico: Hei hei! |

Hello Debora,
Thank you for your question. If you mean how to handle Nordic alphabets, there are couple of solutions if you use US international keyboard.
1. buy an external nordic USB keyboard and use it when you want to type Finnish Ä.Ö, etc.
2.
ä = alt132
ö = alta48
Ä = alt142
Ö = alt0214
Å = alt0197
NumLock must be on.
The best and easiest way is to buy cheap external USB-keyboard, naturally. If you use an Android device, then there are surely nordic keyboard option available. Hope this helps.
Let us know if you have any question.
Cheers,
Aarni

Hei hyvaa paivaa
I am not sure how or what program to use so that I can spell Finnish correctly with the umlaut on top.
Hello Tatjana,
Thank you for your posting.
Yes, you can use these both sentences comfortably when you talk to Finnish people. 😄
The word "hyvästi" is kind of definitive in Finnish and therefore not used so often unless meant so.
Let us know if you have any question.
Cheers,
Aarni

Hei, hyvää paivää!
The new for me is "nähdään taas", I only know "nähdään pian" - see you soon.
And "hyvasti" I never heard before.
Kiitos,
Tatjana
