HideHi FinnishPod101 listeners!
What are the substitute teachers like in your country?
Hei Elsie! ?
Yes, the verb "pelata" is used in conjunction with sports and games, but not with musical instruments. With musical instruments you use the verb "soittaa".
When you're talking about acting (playing a role in a play), we use the verb "näytellä", 'to act'.
The sentence “The elementary school student is passing the test.” can be actually translated both as "Ala-asteen oppilas on läpäisemässä koetta." and "Ala-asteen oppilas läpäisee kokeen.". The choice of words here, "on läpäisemässä koetta", however is expressing that the action is still on-going - the student has not passed the test yet, but is about to.
Parhain terveisin, Best Wishes,

hei hei-
this lesson was for some reason diffiuclt for me, but full of very good information.
On to the next one!
I LOVE Finnish language!
ELSIE
In this lesson's grammar, the
non-past tense tense and the present progressive tense have been the same word in all the examples,
except the last example.
non-past tense Ala-asteen oppilas läpäisee koetta. "The elementary school student passes the test."
present progressive tense Ala-asteen oppilas on läpäisemässä koetta. "The elementary school student is passing the test."
why does just this ONE sentance change the word "läpäisee" to "on läpäisemässä"
and the other example sentances DON'T change?
Thanks!
ELSIE
Hei-
so "opettelee soittamaan"
can mean "learn to play" as in a saxophone...to actually make a sound or tone.
The picture in the video shows some kids -I guess playing a video game.
Can "pella" be used for playing a sport or a game but NOT a musical instrument?
How about "playing a role in a play"? Would you use either, or still a different verb?
