INTRODUCTION
Gina: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Finnish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Gina: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What are you doing? In Finnish this is
Jarmo: Mitä sinä teet?
Gina: The first word in the question is
Jarmo: mitä
Gina: meaning what in English.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) mitä
Gina: Listen again and repeat.
Jarmo: mitä
{Pause}
Gina: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Jarmo: sinä
Gina: meaning you.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) sinä
Gina: Now repeat.
Jarmo: sinä

Gina: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.

Gina: means I'm thinking.
Jarmo: (Slow, by syllable) ajattelen
Gina: Now repeat

Gina: Listen to the speaker say, I'm thinking., and then repeat.
Jarmo: Ajattelen

Gina: To expand on the pattern, replace I'm thinking with I’m studying.
Jarmo: Opiskelen
Gina: I’m studying
Jarmo: (slow) Opiskelen (regular) Opiskelen
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with I’m studying
Jarmo: Opiskelen
Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace I'm thinking. Say I’m studying.

Gina: To expand on the pattern, replace I’m studying with I’m relaxing.
Jarmo: Lepään
Gina: I’m relaxing
Jarmo: (slow) Lepään (regular) Lepään
Gina: Listen to the phrase again, this time with I’m relaxing

Gina: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace I’m studying. Say I’m relaxing.
