Hei Aarni,
Kiitos paljon! Tosi hyödyllistä!
Hei hei -
Malk.
Hello Malk,
Thank you for your questions.
This is an inessive form and endings are -ssa and -ssä. and vowel harmony determines these endings.
There is a good general rule of thumb and it goes like this: When adding an ending, if the word already has dots, the ending will have them too, generally. I and e are neutral, and they can mix with both front and back vowels. There are also some other rules but this is limited space to teach these things here, so, please contact your own teacher for more information.
Let us know if you have any question.

Hei!
What determines whether the suffix here is "issa" or "assa"?
(And are there any other variants?)
Also, could you explain to me what determines whether the final vowel is a or ä, please?
I've heard that this depends on whether other vowels are frontal or "back-of-the-mouth" vowels, but the ii in Pariisissa seems to be frontal to me. Is it derived from the position of the vowel in the stressed first syllable?
Kiitos paljon.
Malk.
