Hello Sally Liu,

Thank you for your question.

Kirjoitit sen ihan oikein.👍

Miksi "after returning" käännetään "palattuani"?

Word "palattuani" is in the second infinitive form and it means "kun palaan"

Hei!

Minulla on kysymys lauseesta "Kurlaan palattuani kotiin."

En tiedä,kirjoitanko tämän lauseen oikein koska en osaa katsoa dialogia.

En ymmärrä tätä lauseen struktuuria.Miksi "after returning" käännetään "palattuani"?

Miten se muodostetaan?

Voisitko vastata minun kysymyskille?

Kiitos paljon!

Hei Elsie!

You posted another question too, sorry to keep you waiting!

The apostrophe is used to separate syllables in words, that have multiple vowels. It helps in perceiving the word and how it is pronounced. The word "vaaka", 'scale', looses it's 'k' (and becomes an 'a') when it's conjugated, and then you need the apostrophe.

Vaaka > vaa'an (scale's) > vaa'alle (on the scale) > vaa'alta (from/off the scale) etc.

Same happens for example with the word "raaka", 'raw':

Raaka > raa'an > raa'alle > raa'alta

Best Wishes,

Hei Elsie!

Well spotted! ?

Yes, literally the sentence "haluan välttää flunssaa." is "I want to avoid a cold.",

but as the phrase "to catch a cold" is common in English, this translation was used.

Sometimes phrases etc. are not translated literally, but as they are typically used in particular situations.

In this lesson:

Haluan välttää flunssaa.

is translated to "I want to avoid catching a cold."

Is it actually "I want to avoid a cold"? I am not understanding a word that means "catching".

Kiitos-

easily confused

but really liking the lessons

Hei hei-

In this lesson:

Astun vaa'alle. (vaaka= scales)

= I step on a scale.

I am really trying, but HOW am I supposed to piece this information together?

What is the apostrophe (') in vaa'alle about? Why is it there, and why is this not expained?

I have NO WAY of knowing this information!

Some of the lessons have a reasonable/smaller amount of new vocabulary to learn, and then there are ones like this that have a very long list of new and difficult words. And for some reason, no examples in the vocabulary words this time, as is usual in the other lessons.

I like them-and it lets you see the new word being used in context.

Trying very much and every day...but this is difficult! Maybe doesn't need to be so difficult?

I am determined and not giving up!

ELSIE
